3 Reasons You Would Want To Start Learning On An Electric Guitar

By Maurice Richard

There are many reasons to want to learn to play guitar on an electric instead of an acoustic.

In the end they are both useful and you could learn on either type of guitar and transfer most of the skills to the other.

If you want to play at campfires with friends it would be a good idea to do some learning on acoustic to make sure you are ready.

However, there are definitely advantages to starting on an electric.

Here are 3 reasons why you should start playing guitar on an electric.

1. It Motivates You More Than Acoustic Guitar

When you go to the guitar store do you immediately head over to the electric guitar section? Do you even notice the acoustic guitar section?

If that's you then you need to tap into this motivation to help you learn to play successfully.

Many people will try to convince you that it is better to start on an acoustic but my bet is most of these people are not trained guitar teachers and are only repeating what they have heard or done.

That is the harder path to learning guitar and they may be correct in stating that if you learn on acoustic you will be able to play anything, but that assumes you find success and many don't.

Don't buy into it! If playing electric is your end goal then why would you ever start on an acoustic guitar?

2. It's Easier To Start With An Electric Guitar

Learning to play guitar is not easy.

I know that professionals make it look easy and fun but when you have never played the instrument it is not like that. It's harder than most other instruments at the beginning.

That's because learning guitar requires you to coordinate both hands at the same time and also learn a totally new configuration and use of your fretting hand to create notes and chords.

And then you want it to sound good so you have to push down with a decent amount of pressure and all of this is much harder to do with a big bulky acoustic guitar.

The good news for you is that if you want to learn electric guitar you reduce or eliminate many of those problems and it will be much easier.

3. You Want To Rock

When you look at your future self, do you see yourself playing with friends at a campfire with an acoustic guitar or ripping a cool solo on your electric?

If the answer is the latter then you need to start on an electric. This is the motivation and the fuel for you to want to learn so harness that and use it to your advantage.

You may have to learn some basic chords on electric but as soon as you are ready you need to start learning skills that are specific to electric and rocking out.

You want to get to that solo as soon as possible and that will be much easier if you start on an electric.
